Bookbinding supplies for sewing books by hand: linen thread, needles, beeswax, an awl for piercing sewing holes, and bone folders for crisp folds.
If you're starting out, the Artway Bookbinding Kit brings those tools together in one bag, ready for pamphlets, zines and simple stitched books. Scalpels and self-healing cutting mats are here too, for trimming paper and board.
Paper, linen thread, a needle, an awl to pierce the sewing holes and a bone folder to crease the folds, plus a knife and cutting mat for trimming. Our Bookbinding Kit covers the thread, needles, beeswax, awl and bone folder.
Beeswax stops the thread tangling and fraying as you sew, and helps it grip, so the stitches stay tight. If your thread is unwaxed, draw it across the block a few times before you start.
A bone folder is harder and smoother, so it makes sharper, cleaner creases. A wooden folder costs less and does well for everyday folding, and it doubles as a sculpting tool.
Cartridge paper gives smooth, even pages for a sketchbook or journal. Cotton rag paper has a softer, handmade feel. Whichever you use, fold with the grain so the pages lie flat.
Greyboard. Ours is 1.5mm thick and lined to stay flat. Cut it to size, then cover it with decorative paper.
