Imitation gold leaf, with silver and copper leaf, size adhesive and shellac varnish for gilding frames, furniture, lettering and artwork.
Our gold leaf is a brass alloy beaten thin like the real thing, so it gives the same look for far less. If you're new to gilding, the Gold Leaf Kit has what you need to start, with shellac as an option.
No, it's imitation gold leaf, made from a brass alloy. It looks very close to genuine gold leaf and costs a fraction as much. Unlike real gold it can tarnish over time, so seal it with a coat of shellac once it's cured.
Brush a thin layer of size only where you want the leaf, and wait until it turns tacky rather than wet, which takes at least 15 minutes. Lay the leaf on, press it down gently, then brush away the loose edges with a soft, dry brush. Leave it for 24 hours to cure before you varnish.
Two jobs. Brushed on before gilding, it seals absorbent surfaces like wood and paper so the size sits on top. Brushed over cured leaf, it protects it from tarnishing. It dries completely clear and thins with methylated spirit. It's highly flammable, so keep it away from heat and flames.
Wood, picture frames, furniture, plaster, card and paper all take leaf well. Seal anything porous with shellac first, and make sure the surface is clean and free of dust.
