Questions we get asked

Which scalpel blade should I use?

The No. 11 is the long, straight point most people use for stencils, tight corners and cutting along a ruler. The 10A has a short curved edge, which suits curves. Both fit the No. 3 handle.

What's the difference between an ACM craft knife and a steel scalpel?

The ACM No. 1 is shaped like a pen, with a textured grip and a plastic blade guard, so it's easy to hold and safe to keep in a pencil case. The Swann-Morton No. 3 scalpel has a flat steel handle that takes different blade shapes, such as the No. 11 and 10A. The two take different blades, so buy ACM replacement blades for the ACM knife and scalpel blades for the No. 3.

How do I change a scalpel blade safely?

Use a blade remover rather than your fingers. It grips the old blade, slides it off the handle and holds it until it's in the bin.

What size cutting mat do I need?

One size bigger than the paper you cut most. A3 suits most desks and A4 work. A2 or A1 is worth it for mount board and large sheets, and the A2 folding mat packs away when you're done.
